The day I learned to Fly
Advanced Life Skills 232
How to “fly”
Step 1: Get a Cape
Any cape will do, but my expert advice would tell you to design your own. When I was a much younger kid than I am now, my cape was constructed out of black synthetic material that held the letter “J” outlined in glitter.
Here’s a few examples when creating your cape:
The “Don’t F#@$ with me, I’m the hero of this story” Cape
The “Sexy Black Galaxy” Cape
The “I’m never growing up” Cape Series
(belts and eyewear not included)
The “I can save the planet and still look good in Midtown” Cape
The “Classic Red” Cape
Step 2: Wear the Cape
What am I, your mother? Just put it on.
In all fairness, there is one question I get a lot, “What if I’m at home with the baby and I can’t find a babysitter in time and I don’t have enough time to get ready?”
The answer? Looks like Baby Gavin is coming with you. Please see figure 1.1 below.

Step 3: Fly
We need to define a few words before you take off.
Fly – /flī/ verb:
- (a bird or other winged creature) moving through the air under control.
Winged – /wingd/ adjective:
- having wings
- having a winglike part or parts
Creature – /ˈkrēCHər/ noun:
- an animate being.
Here’s the real definition of flying that the government does’t what you to know:
To fly: An animate being with a winglike part moving through the air under control.
“Animate being” = you (Check)
Winglike Part = your cape (Check)
Moving through the air under control… hmmm, as far as I’m concerned, “Life” is summed up by us moving through the air, but what does “under control” mean?
Control – \kən-ˈtrōl\ noun:
- having direct influence over
So when we put it all together:
Flying = You + cape + moving through life/air + having direct influence over yourself
So how do you get control over yourself?
Take the leap of faith, and fly…
